THE FRESHMAN ACADEMY
The 2009-2010 school year saw Raritan High School inaugurate our Freshman Academy. The goal of this modification to our high school environment was to address issues and concerns that face our incoming freshmen in order to make a smooth transition to high school.
We have developed this program around the concept of a small learning community. Research has shown this model to be advantageous to the successful transition of incoming freshmen to the curricular and social expectations of high school while maintaining the student's focus on academic achievement.
The incoming freshmen will be surrounded by a select team of staff who are committed to utilizing strategies that are geared to both teaching and addressing the particular needs of each member of the freshman class. There will be special programs geared specifically for freshmen presented throughout the year, tailored to the needs and concerns of the ninth grade community.
The 2011-2012 school year will see a major enhancement to the freshman academy:
- Teri Bates, one of our guidance counselors at Raritan High School, will be the counselor for the 9th grade class. This change will enhance Mrs. Bates' ability to focus solely the needs, concerns, and issues of the freshman class.
- The freshman mentor initiative. Upper classmen (PALs) have been assigned a group of freshmen who they will serve as mentors to. The goal is to help our new students acclimate to the high school environment and expectations.
