What is Reader's Workshop?

Reader’s workshop is a program designed to teach students to value words and to think about what they read and how it relates to their own environment.

Reader’s Workshop provides students with opportunities to read for longer stretches of time and discuss books to deepen student understanding and interest.

Students set goals for themselves as readers

–What do they want to be better at?

Learning how to select “just right” books

–5 finger rule (if there are 5 or more tricky words or on a page than the book is too hard)

–set up a student shopping schedule for “just right” books

Building Reading Stamina

–Read longer and stronger

–Reflect on reading logs and set new goals

•Early readers will not only learn to read but will learn to become “good” readers

Reader's Workshop Structure

•Mini-lesson (10 minutes)

•Independent Reading (adjust to fit student needs, 30+ minutes)

–While whole class reads independently, teacher confers with individual students or meets with a small strategy or guided reading group or confers with a book club.

–Students should be “jotting” as they read their “just right” book.

•Mid-workshop Teaching Point

–Teacher discusses a new point or reiterates a previous point “I like how…..”

•Continue Reading , Jotting , and Conferring

•Share time

To reiterate goal of lesson and to have students share their application of mini-lesson. Students can read a jot with reading buddy or teacher can read aloud a sample of quality student work or share an observation of a good student model.

Comprehension

Students are not really reading unless they are thinking about the text.

Each student uses post-its and a reader’s journal.

To build student comprehension, readers are required to jot down their thoughts while reading.

Student’s respond to text through post-its or thought writing “long” in their journals.

Asking students to hand in their smartest Post-it note for the day helps the teacher to quickly monitor the student's progress (see “Jot Lot” Poster)
