Health Policies from Dr. Lusk

Illness/Injuries/First Aid in School:

  • A child with an oral temperature of 100.4 degrees or above and/or presenting symptoms which in the professional opinion of the nurse are symptomatic of illness, should be sent home

  • The student should be afebrile for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Following a vomiting incident, the student should remain at home for at least 24 hours 

  • Students out of school for more than 3 days will need clearance and a note from their primary care physician or doctor to return back to school

  • Refer to COVID-19 section for illness related to COVID-19 

Common Childhood Illness Policies: 

  1. Head Lice-Student excluded from school until treatment is given and the child is nit free. 

  2. Ringworm-Student excluded from school and must have a doctor's note to return.

  3. Impetigo-Student excluded for 24 hours and must have a doctor's note to return.

  4. Conjunctivitis(Pink Eye)-Student excluded from school and must have four doses of medication and a doctors note to return to school.

  5. Strep Throat-Student excluded from school and must have two doses of antibiotic therapy and be fever free prior to returning to school. 

  6. Chicken Pox- Student excluded for approximately 7 days or until vesicles are crusted over.

  7. Rashes-Student excluded from school until diagnosis is made by a doctor and treatment started if needed. 

  8. Fever-Student should be fever free (under 100.4oF) for 24 hours before returning to school.

  9. Vomiting-Student should not have vomited in the 24 hours before returning to school

COVID-19: 

A child with an oral temperature of 100.4 or above and/or presenting symptoms which in the professional opinion of the nurse are symptomatic of illness, should be sent home.

  1. The student should be isolated while awaiting to be picked up by parent/guardian

  2. The student should maintain face mask

  3. Parent/guardian to immediately seek medical treatment

  4. Confirmed COVID-19: Before returning to school the The student must meet criteria below:

    • should be afebrile for at least 24 hours without use of medication to decrease the fever,

    • five days after the first symptom and symptoms are resolving before returning to school (day zero= is day of symptoms; 5 days; day 6= return to school if well)

    • Attest that symptoms are resolving

  5. Confirmed COVID-19 student does not need to have a doctor’s note to return to school. 

  6. People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to virus. -Symptoms: fever, chills, sweats, cough, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, chest pain/tightness/pressure, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea/vomiting, or diarrhea.

  7. Reporting will be per Hazlet Board of Education Policies and procedures.
