Dear Beers Street Families:
A warm welcome to all our families for the upcoming academic year. We hope the summer months were both restful and enjoyable for you and your children. Our staff has been diligently preparing for a successful year of learning and growth. Below, you will find important information regarding the return to school.
The parent portal opens on Friday, August 29th, and student schedules will be available for viewing. You may also find a link to the parent portal on our homepage: hazlet.org/o/bses. If you have any issues accessing the parent portal, don't hesitate to contact the school secretary, Maria Sansolo, at (732) 264-1107 ext. 3001 or msansolo@hazlet.org.
All parents must complete an online emergency card for each of their children attending the Hazlet Township School District every year. This information is crucial for reunification purposes. You can find the link for the Family ID Emergency Card Form here. Please update the Family ID Emergency Card by September 15th. You can also find instructions for updating your Realtime contact information here. Realtime is used to contact families in case of emergencies and send weather-related alerts, reminders, theme days, and special upcoming events. Please check the box so that you may receive these important email and text alerts.
All 5th graders (and new to the district 6th graders) will receive a new Chromebook. Beginning Friday, August 29th, parents of students who are new to the Hazlet school district can acknowledge the Chromebook Responsibility Contract in the parent portal. Please click the link, follow the instructions, and electronically sign off on the Chromebook Responsibility Contract in the parent portal. Please do this so we may distribute your child’s Chromebook as soon as possible. Please note: Students in 5th grade will not receive a new Chromebook unless they return their charger, Chromebook, or pay any outstanding fines from the previous school year. Loaner Chromebooks will only be given to students who have Chromebooks that need to be repaired (malfunctioning). Students who forget their Chromebook or forget to charge their device will not be provided with a Chromebook.
Orientation for all 5th grade students (including new 6th grade students) and their parents/guardians will take place on Wednesday, September 3rd, at 1:00 PM in the gymnasium. I'll share an overview of Beers Street School and introduce our teachers and staff. In addition, students will have an opportunity to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. This helps to alleviate some of the new school jitters.
The first day of school for all students is Thursday, September 4th. School hours are from 8:10 AM until 2:50 PM. Students should not arrive at school before 8:00 AM, as there is no supervision at that time. Parents dropping their children off should follow these guidelines. Between 8:00 AM and 8:10 AM, please pull up to the curb and drop off your child at the "SLOW!" sign. Here, students can exit safely onto the sidewalk. Please do not drop off students in the "BUS ZONE" marked by yellow lines. Following these guidelines helps to maintain a clear pathway for buses entering the parking lot and for students to exit their vehicles safely. If you arrive late to school (after 8:10 AM), please park in the visitor lot and escort your child to the main office entrance, door #1.
Dismissal begins at 2:50 PM. Pick-up and walking 6th grade students will be dismissed on the north side and will be escorted to the main parking lot. Pick-up and walking 5th grade students will be released from the south side (adjacent to Beers Street Park). We ask that 5th grade parents park in the lot to the left of the school, next to the park.
Bus times and locations are available to view in the parent portal. If you have questions regarding bus transportation, please contact the Transportation Department at 732-264-8404, Ex. 1115.
On the first day of school, students will bring home forms to be signed, including our Beer Street School Rules form that acknowledges the Student/Parent Handbook located on the Beers Street homepage.
Breakfast and lunch will be offered beginning Thursday, September 4th. The price of school breakfast is $2.15, and school lunch is $3.70. You must have enough funds in your child's account to order breakfast or lunch. The free or reduced lunch application is available electronically in the parent portal. To qualify, you must apply every year. Students will order lunch and breakfast daily in homeroom. You may find the link to the lunch menu on the Beers Street School homepage.
If, at any time this year, you determine your child should stay home from school due to illness or any other reason, please call the Health Office and inform the nurse, Pat Raphael, at 732-264-1107 ext. 3003 or send an email to bssattendance@hazlet.org. Please note the district's attendance policy. Students will lose credit after 16 absences. Students must be in school for a minimum of one hour of classroom instruction before lunch and one hour after lunch for students to be considered present.
Students and staff are encouraged to wear Beers Street green on Fridays. There is also an online spirit wear shop here.
Back to School Night is on Tuesday, September 9, at 7:00 PM for parents and guardians. If at any time your child needs additional support or if you have concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. It is our mission to support your child in whatever way we can. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and we look forward to the start of a new school year!
Sincerely,
Ian Collis
Principal
